When all else fails, expression won't

I write, therefore I am.

There are countless tactics any individual employs to attempt slipping into various personas, conceal flaws, or blatantly deceive.

Image

Go ahead, spend an hour everyday memorizing bad jokes on the pretext of scoffing at them, while actually trying to pepper your already insomnia-curing conversational skills with those anecdotes, adorn yourself with the apparel featured in fashion magazines- which covers almost nothing at all this season. Pay $200 to straighten your hair so that it resembles fibreglass gone wrong- you’ll soon realise that doing so will render you completely inconspicuous. Force yourself to purchase cool music so that you can appear cool to your friends, blasting those cool songs from your cool oversized headphones. How cool. Oh, and let 4 digits define you. Nokia divides consumers into 14 distinct target markets. I own a 6170. I wonder which profile I fit … for now, till I upgrade.

Guys, you don’t have to do all this to make a short statement about yourselves. Just take off your pants.

Girls, continue to blame everything on PMS. If you don’t have it, get it. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Still feeling petulant? Just think of it this way- the men don’t get it.

The unspecified gender, try to conform. Find an accepted group to fit into. There are only two.

Assets

Anybody with enough assets can make it big. For a price. With the correct mindset.

Scenario A

Physical assets- Flaunt your way through.

Scenario B

Financial assets- Buy your way though.

Scenario C

Intellectual assets- Scheme your way through

OR

Simply combine A and B. Apparently, that takes some intelligence to do.

This is exactly what society has transformed us into- shallow and stereotypical; and it is precisely these two traits that mask our true selves.

The antidote

How then, do you find who you really are? There are two options.

Go to the self-help section in either Borders or Kinokuniya. (I’d suggest Borders, because there’s a Coffee Bean in the vicinity and you can order an Original Ice Blended™ Black Forest Mocha, small, no cream, extra shot of expresso. A caffeine high is the first step to self-discovery.)

Write.

Most people have no idea how much you can find out about yourself through writing. Each person has his or her individual style (key word alert: individual). The process and the result is a reflection of the person within (key word alert: within). Everything, about writing speaks volumes about what goes on behind the scenes. Writing encapsulates the fusion of the intellect, emotions, observation, perception, understanding and mostly, the self.

In life, there is write and wrong.

I think I know who I am.
